US President Joe Biden calls for calm

  • In a statement on November 29, 2021, US President Joe Biden provided an update on the evolving health situation and, in particular, the growing concern over the new Omicron variant, spotted for the first time in South Africa. Japan, Israel and Australia have announced the closure of their borders to all international nationals, in order to limit the spread of the variant.
  • This is not the case with the United States. Joe Biden has indicated that he “does not anticipate this stage” the implementation of new restrictions for travel to the United States. He also ruled out any containment measures on American territory.
  • The USA is therefore sticking to the entry ban for 8 southern African countries, including South Africa. No other ban was pronounced, while many rumors on Facebook anticipated an imminent closure of borders for Europeans. It is not so.
  • Joe Biden reaffirmed the interest of being vaccinated against Covid-19 and wearing a mask in closed places. The US President also pointed out that the pharmaceutical industry was already working on modifying vaccines, if necessary.
  • For more information, here are the rules for going to the USA as part of health measures. Also take a look at the announcements of the French government from January 15, 2022.

No border closure on the French side

  • On the side of the French government, the borders will also remain open for all countries except for the countries of southern Africa. During an interview on Europe1, November 30, 2021, French government spokesman Gabriel Attal said that at this stage “there are no plans to close the borders”.
  • UPDATE : On December 1, 2021, the French government spokesperson announced that all travelers from countries outside the European Union will be required to present a negative test. This test must be carried out at least 48 hours before returning to France. This new rule applies to both vaccinated and unvaccinated people against Covid-19.
