The government has decreed new rules to curb the Omicron variant
Faced with the Omicron variant, considered more contagious, Ireland is following in the footsteps of many European countries, by establishing new health restrictions… And unfortunately, they have an aftertaste of confinement. Thus, the government spoke this Friday, December 17, and presented a list of measures intended to curb the spread of the virus… And they are not to please the Irish…
Overview of the new restrictions in Ireland, from December 20 to January 30, 2022
1. Pubs and restaurants close from 8 p.m.
The NPHET National Public Health Emergency Team has been very clear. For her, it is necessary to lower the closing hours of restaurants and Irish pubs. Although the latter recommended 5:00 p.m., the Irish government decided to set this limit at 8:00 p.m.
In fact, all restaurants and pubs in Ireland will have to close at 8:00 p.m., otherwise they will be fined. This rule will come into effect from December 20, and will extend at least until January 30.
It should be noted that other places of reception of the public are also concerned by this regulation: places of spectacles, theaters, sports halls, cinemas, community places… All will be concerned by this curfew.
Please note that delivery and take-out services will not be affected by this curfew and may continue to operate beyond this time. Good news for Irish people wishing to have them delivered to their homes.
2. Rules for travelers
In his TV announcement this evening, the Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Micheál Martin said that the rules were hardly changing for travelers wishing to visit Ireland (see our special file here)… But every traveler is now advised to get tested daily (via an antigen test) over a period of 5 days, starting on the day of arrival.
A new measure which is proving to be rather restrictive for many travellers…
3. Travel supervised according to the vaccination profile of the Irish
As for the possibilities of travel to Ireland, the Irish Prime Minister indicated that Irish people who received a booster vaccine less than a week ago are invited to carry out 3 antigenic tests over five days, and to stay at home as much as possible. .
For Irish people who have not yet received a reminder, they must restrict their movements for 10 days. The HSE (Health Service in Ireland) has yet to decide on the best testing regime for people in this category.
Finally, the Irish are invited to avoid social mixing as much as possible. Thus, the current rule has not changed: the government estimates that a maximum of 3 households can meet in a fourth household. But the government is encouraging people to get tested before Christmas, in order to avoid a flare-up of the epidemic, as Ireland unfortunately experienced last year.
Measures that are strangely reminiscent of the lockout of the previous year
The Irish fear a backlash
Admittedly, the rules introduced as of Monday are still reasonable. But they have a strange echo compared to the situation in Ireland at the start of 2021. The end-of-year celebrations had caused a considerable incidence rate, placing the country with one of the worst contamination rates in the world!
To raise the bar, Ireland had decided on the most drastic confinement (lockout), which had lasted several months. A situation that the government wishes to avoid at all costs… by introducing more moderate rules, but intended to limit the damage as much as possible.
