Nantes: the “craziest city in France” according to the Sunday Times

You have to believe that the adventurous and innovative spirit of Jules Verne, a famous writer born in Nantes, is still very present in the city which prides itself on attracting the most creative minds. Some 50 km from the Loire estuary, imagination and inventiveness are limitless, especially when it comes to projects with a direct impact on society and better living.

A French entrepreneur can testify to this. When I arrived here, I was immediately seduced by the open-mindedness of the people, by this energy and this magnetism conducive to innovation. enthuses Benoit Sanson, co-founder of the architectural firm 31/44, settled in Nantes for two years with his family. The native of Rouen lived fifteen years in London where he founded his architectural firm, always located on the side of Brick Lane in the east of the capital, before opening a subsidiary in Nantes in March 2020. It was above all a personal choice, he confides. I wanted to come back and settle in France with my German wife and my two children, then aged 10 and 12. We wanted to gain in quality of life and we do not regret this decision. Schooled in an English public school in Brixton, our children had never taken French lessons. However, they quickly integrated into the international section of the Blanche de Castille school.»

For the architect, the choice of Nantes was very quickly imposed. I let myself be seduced by the dynamism of the city and the economic potential of the entire region. It’s a real strategic choice. We have here a vast playground, very varied, which extends from Nantes to Saint-Nazaire (in full revival), from Angers to La Rochelle, to La Baule. We have just won a competition to develop 1,500 m2 of offices in Nantes, we are working on projects for the rehabilitation of industrial wastelands as well as the renovation or construction of villas. I obviously remain very focused on the development of the activity in Nantes, but I always keep an eye on what is happening in London with regular exchanges with my associates. The distance does not prevent our collaborative work, because during the pandemic we have developed powerful tools to communicate and I have an excellent connection between Nantes airport and London Gatwick airport. »

Benoit Sanson will be at London on April 27 to share his experience and his vision of Nantes, both from a professional and personal point of view.
